Experiences: Locating the fishing fleet

Installation of a network of VHF AIS receivers, to receive AIS signals sent by fishing vessels.

This information locates the Basque Country’s operational fleet, as well as boats from other communities sailing waters under Basque authority. It does so in real time, providing extra information like speed and course, such that routes can be estimated, and even control transit through areas excluded from fishing activity.

To this end, at least 10 receivers will be installed on the coast to send the information received to the sectorial servers located at HAZI. This information will be used by the fisheries inspection service, so as to:

• Monitor the location of fishing vessels in waters under regional authority.
• Obtain records on vessel movements.
• Cross-check vessels with permits issued by fishery.
• Protected excluded fishing grounds and protected biotopes.
